FutureBUILDS IN THE NEWS

Real estate development incubator aims to increase industry diversity

How a new business incubator is breaking down barriers in the powerful world of GTA real estate development

ABOUT FUTUREBUILDS

FutureBUILDS is a BIPOC Real Estate Development Incubator developed by Monumental and implemented in partnership with the University of Toronto's Infrastructure Institute. The project is funded by the Future Skills Centre.

FutureBUILDS aims to support mid-career Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) individuals who are interested in launching entrepreneurial ventures in real estate development. This free incubator program is informed by research conducted by Monumental on the experiences of racialized individuals in the real estate development sector. The program aims to create a new cohort of real estate developers across Canada, starting with the pilot program in Toronto which launched in Spring 2023.

The initiative's goal is to bring new thinking, agility, and ideas into the sector by engaging BIPOC entrepreneurs and innovators who are passionate about addressing issues of access to housing and housing affordability.

One study estimated only 14 percent of positions in ownership, partner, and C-level positions in the industry are held by visible minorities (Varga, 2021).” - Monumental Projects x FSC

This research highlighted the need to improve access for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals to pursue careers as real estate developers in Canada. It also shed light on the challenges BIPOC developers face while navigating the industry and why it is essential to developer resources and supports to them on their endeavours.
